Evergreen

"Evergreen" was written for our 70th Anniversary issue, but we decided to make it an early holiday gift to our readers instead. M. Rickert's most recent piece for us, in the September/October 2011 issue, was "The Corpse Painter's Masterpiece," which went on to win the 2012 Shirley Jackson Award. Since then she's been busy with a novel, The Memory Garden, a collection, You Have Never Been Here: New and Selected Stories, and a novella, The Mothers of Voorhisville. She also has a story in Echoes, Ellen Datlow's new anthology of ghost stories published last August. She returns to our pages with this seasonal tale. Close-reading fans of her fiction may find some connections to her other stories.
